Water balloon portraits.

 

I used Hahnel Captur Pro to detect the sound of the bursting balloons and fire my speedlights at the right moment. It transmits wirelessly to receivers attached to each speedlight. As well as a sound trigger, this nifty device has sensors for light, infrared and laser. The challenge was, it had to be done in complete darkness for the flash duration to freeze the action during a two-second exposure.

The bomb.

There’s lots to think about on a shoot like this - the timing of the shot, the lighting setup, the posing, the practicalities of shooting in the dark, the danger of bursting water bombs destroying your gear. It’s a slippery challenge in more ways than one, but that’s all part of the fun….
